Rose Garden Broadcast is a collaboration with sound and electronic media artist Vicky Clarke created for Light Night Wigan, 2024. The installation was co-created with young people from Wigan Youth Zone and commissioned by Things That Go On Things.

Rose Garden Broadcast amplifies and transmits the hidden elemental sounds below and above the surface of the Rose Garden at Mesnes Park, Wigan. On wireless headphones, visitors tune in to three different ‘earth to sky’ frequency bands broadcast from electronic, illuminated radio sculptures housed in Victorian glass cloches. Though dormant in winter, Rose Garden Broadcast ‘brings back the blooms’ as digital twins on LED screens displaying pixel art roses as digital doppelgangers of the garden’s rose species – as created by local young people from Wigan Youth Zone. Synthesized-radio inspired soundscapes shower down from overhead illuminated speakers creating a layered, spatialised, immersive listening experience as you move around the space.
